Hi!

My name is Gus francis Culligan, I live in los angeles california, I’m from minneapolis, and I attended rhode island school of design.

I primarily make paintings, with varying degrees of assemblage, using found objects and borrowed or invented iconography. Figures, symbols, and things that look like writing come in and out of legibility. Curly gestures meet surfaces that suggest dust, wear, and the passing of time. The work comes from daily experience and an inner life; humor is integral, but sentiment is just as cherished. I want to be understood without being declarative, and to allow for uncertainty without avoiding where I stand. I believe that unique experience is something we all share. I am fundamentally interested in the gap between meaning and understanding.
